DIALOGUES -approaches for a publication

The Graphic Design Library

Here's a revised version of the last proposal, I can't be in the meeting tonight untill about 7. I think something along these lines directed at the reader would be usefull, hopefully it deals with the points made last week, its more direct and outlines the aims and means.

The Graphic Design Library

The Leeds Metropolitan MA Graphic Arts and Design candidates are inviting you to become part of an exhibition which will be based in the library from 18th - 25th August .

We will be using the Civic Quarter Library to create Graphic work which looks at the relationship between us and you, the designer and the viewer.

Members of the MA group will be using the library to collect and present a set of images and texts which will act as starting points for some creative dialogue.

You the viewer are asked to respond to these starting points in a way which adds to or links them to other images and texts, a sort of post and comment. Your response can be made either by attending the exhibition where you will be issued with a copy card to collect sources from the library or by submitting images digitally.

We will then use the resources in the library to expand upon and respond to, the contributions which we receive.

The material collected will be posted up on a series of boards, each containing the original starting point, where we will start to organize and edit the information.

We will use this information to produce a publication. We will give you the participant, a number of options to choose from informing us of how you wish to receive this publication.

( example ) The choices are as follows: 1 A6 postcard, 1 A5 booklet , 1 A2 poster, 1 JPEG.

I'm going to think about this properly tonight but my initial thought is how much information do we have to give the audience?
If we use the internet as our starting point and the library is the internet in a physical form, then what you are proposing is the initlial sign up stage.

If you sign up for a site like this or Facebook, you don't have to know what the sign up information is going to be used for. It helps create your profile page, but behind the scenes the sites creators are looking to capture specific meta data that they can use later on.

Prehaps a better example is Flickr, the creators of Flickr intend you to use the site one way and give you a series of tools/ options that appear to give the user choices. When in fact Flickr is collecting and storing images/data that can be used later on. The user doesn't have to know how or why this process is taking place; Flickr is just a place to post you photos to.

What I'm saying is do we make more of what the user is going to get out of submitting work (the publishing on demand concept) but at the same we are looking for certain responses or actions form users. User don't have to be aware of what we're doing, do they?

This is the text I'm using as part of my learning agreement proposals; related to this site and exhibition proposal. I really like Mark's proposal for the exhibition and think this is what we should present to Aidan next week.

No 4: Graphic Arts and Design Leeds
Using an existing social networking platform Graphic Arts and Design Leeds is an online space for ideas and contributions to an MA group exhibition and publication. An alternative to a physical studio space, the concept is to create an online network to develop ideas. Working together users bring their own area of expertise to the group.

The site is a gathering point, this involves a series of weekly online meetings. These meetings work differently from traditional seminars and lecturers, posts can be more considered as there is more time to think, responses don't have to be immediate.

Unlike a traditional studio space the site allows users to collaborate without having to meet in person. There are a number of benefits to working this way. Flexibility means students can drop in and out of sessions, students who can't attend at the time are able to respond to posts during the week.

No 13: MA Publication part 2
An MA exhibition. Using graphicartsdesign.ning.com as a starting point the exhibition will explore the changing role of graphic designer and viewer with the development of web 2.0 and web 3.0. Graphic Arts and Design Leeds has been a platform to explore how new technologies have altered the relationship between maker and viewer. The exhibition will aim to illustrate and clarify some of the issues raised by discussions on the site.

The purpose of the exhibition is not to showcase finished work. Instead we intend to show the relationship between designer and viewer in the making of work and how this is starting to alter. A large part of this changing relationship is the explosion of choice. Choice of what you consume and how you consume it.

We invite people to submit images based around the theme of dialogue. People who submit will get a new image designed by the MA group and incorporating their original image in return. When submitting work users are given a number of options of eg paper size, paper stock or digital image.

The Civic Quarter Library becomes the focus of making and exhibiting work. Both a publishing house and a physical representation of the Graphic Arts and Design Leeds site.
