MA Group Meeting 08.04.09

This is the space I'm suggesting the current MA group use to have a series of online discussions over the Easter break. If you follow one of the discussions at the bottom of the page you can see the structure of the conversations - just reply > you can enter a discussion at at any point > It may also be interesting to view last years conversations which might illustrate some of the concerns of the previous group.

Rather than set a time the discussion could be ongoing from the 8th onwards -
or / we can meet at 10am / continue the course meet time >

ok, sounds good.
can i just say what i personally think would be useful at this point. stop me if i'm wrong:

(1) establishing a list of possible venues in Leeds - so we know how much room we have to work with and what type of environment we respond to. it would be good to limit the choice we have over this at an early stage so that we can set about adapting early on (that make sense?)
(2) individually establishing what / what type of work we want to be showing in this space
(3) coming up with an initial statement as mentioned today

That all makes sense to me. I can't think of any big spaces in Leeds i'm afraid (other than PSL).

What does anyone think about having some king of screening / gig for those of us who make noise, films and live visuals? I can think of several venues for something like that. The Brudenell being the first place to come to mind, or maybe even the Hyde Park Picture House...

maybe we can look at smaller precence's at the swankier art gallerys of leeds? (City Art gallery etc)- it could be possible to negotiate a small presense which would raise the visibility of where ever the main leeds show was (maybe means we could look at non-gallery sites?) This could even be a simple web cam of the show (real or not real) being shown in other spaces. On the gallery spaces in Leeds - Leeds Met may well be a goer depending on the politics of its move over the raod. Think it makes sense for each of us to look at writting a proposal for work. This does not have to be a proposal for an exact artwork, it could for a kind/type/interest - in the world of visual art proposing a 'this is the way Im interested in producing work for x,yz sghow' is a must have skill.
The screening/sound thing spounds like a really good idea - I may finsih a film about ducks just for it.
I like the idea that the MA show has a kind of hub and other activities/presences off it that can inform and feed back to the hub (as well as take people there) Guess we do need to be realistic about our tme (in how much we try and do) but above all everyone showing needs to want this to happen/be prepared to make it happen. I like the idea of hubs (and ducks), if we had a gig type event we could film it and broadcast it back at the show. There is a lot of potential for webcam tomfoolery too (as you said, it could potentially be not real).

A screening/ gig sounds like a good idea! We could use the money we get towards paying for the gallery in london.

me and jel turned up his morning but noone else did - mind you noone else (to my knowledge) is desperate mum ready to leave house even on off chance of other activity!

i amtrying to write a proposal but it's pretty hard when you dont know what space/ funds/ inspiration are going to be..so i have ended up on internet instead...

would it help to choose a theme for the exhibition? or is it literally final exhibition and therefore random?

hi Liz, I went in yesterday and H block was all locked up so hung out in the library instead... because like most of us I guess I generaly respond to opportunity/context, one way I use to think of proposals and write them is to write about and play upon the that. I guess I mean proposing an approach and on the space bit I think it is about proposing the ideal (followed by the realistc ;-)) then at least we can have a sense of how big aspace/kind of space we need to find...and when it comes to it we are all going to have to negotiate room.... Rupe (maybe Pete curating it would negate the need for negitioation amongst ourselves and avoid tears (mine!) after all thats pretty much how it works everywhere else)

just got back from london having looked at the gallery space down there. it's totally awesome - white walls, grey concrete floor, raised stage area at front, walls 16ft high aprox with extra 2 ft (atleast) rigging area above. rig set up all around that accomodates various types of spotlights as well as projectors if need be. according to the guy who runs it there are places you can rent equipment in the immediate area so we needn't bother bringing to much from leeds. loading area leading directly into gallery space to get larger work in.
i couldnt get a camera so no pictures unfortunately.
the area is great, very busy for a side street with a few other galleries in the area and next door to the first theatre. guy had a lot to say about the history of the area but i cant remember any of it now. its between bricklane and shoreditch high street.

the show thats on at the moment is one of the most impressive ones ive seen for a long time. if the quality of work exhibited there is always that high then if we botch this it will be really embarrassing so the whole thing needs to be taken seriously (i'd personally say it's more important than anything that happens in leeds but feel free to dispute this).

from what martin tells me, because it is an artist run space we are pretty much expected to invigilate this for ourselves, so people are going to have to be available. i met pete for a drink afterwards and he said that he may be able to help with some of that but we should e doing it where possible i think.

for the people that are going to be doing this it seems quite important that everyone understand what everyone else does in their work. while i was in there people came in and asked the staff about the work so expect the same thing to be happening.
