DIALOGUES -approaches for a publication

MA Group Meeting 08.04.09

This is the space I'm suggesting the current MA group use to have a series of online discussions over the Easter break. If you follow one of the discussions at the bottom of the page you can see the structure of the conversations - just reply > you can enter a discussion at at any point > It may also be interesting to view last years conversations which might illustrate some of the concerns of the previous group.

Rather than set a time the discussion could be ongoing from the 8th onwards -
or / we can meet at 10am / continue the course meet time >

we need to contact the leeds art gallery again [ i can do this] as Michael suggested to organise some student-led talks - or organise the lecture theatre itself as a space - reinventing it - showing/performance/transmission -all the documentations / events are integrated there and broadcast in the process. So start, say, with interviewing Colm Lally and Nooshin farhid, and Barbara Steveni { FlatTime House, John Latham archive] which is run by Elisa Kaye, an ex-graduate I taught at Goldsmiths who I met to talk about collaborations with us... so I will write to Shiel Bhahj at leeds Art gallery when I have been given an idea from you as to what you want to do { Michael} - also I have the contact { ashley you have it too} of Alan who filmed the performance in conference arena. It was profiled at the conference on a 3m / 5m screen - so well received.

we have invitations from Merz / Ian Hunter to link up with summer school to consider. also met a number of international contacts.
I wont be there on wednesday so I think that Chris and Liz can work with the idea of putting togther archive material and also documenting ongoing transmission site to consider the adjunctive material of collaborations publication for both shows. I met with Martin Sexton as well - the event was attended by around several hundred [ the street was holding events Thursday night so it was packed - i can show you pictures next week]
Peter Suchin is in tomorrow [tuesday] I believe and should be approached about these interviews at the Leeds Art Gallery. I also hope that progress is being made on structures of documents as we discussed about individual approaches. It would be timely to present visually that which is being proposed in words[ if there is some evidence of drawings, diagrams, or pieces indicative of fuller realisation] that might also be put together in a designed format[?]
It would also be good for the group those who havent been around for a while to catch up with the others in terms of exchanging ideas.

Good Afternoon.
Continuing on from the discussions we've had about the Publication I'm currently trying to source printers / paper supplies which by next Wednesday I should be able to share figures / ideas. I'm staying in Newcastle tomorrow while I get the project off the ground. If anyone has work samples / bits of text that they want to send to me to help in the planning stages, send it to markdemidiovc@yahoo.co.uk.

Peter Suchin will be in the space at 10.00am onwards in the morning to advise on the interview project and the written proposals in view of a formation of both the 'document' and any publication and the way that the interview can contribute to the understanding of personal projects [your work itself] undertaken during the MA - ie that there is a relationship between the work, your intention and its historical, theoretical and contextual readings that can be brought together as forming that understanding ' demonstrating critical/contextual' awareness' [ as objectively by the examiners]. It also performs as a professional practice, in line with the independently organised 'obselete' show in London. It could be that Peter Suchin will interview you- and that you in turn could perform interviews with guest artists. These can be held at Leeds Art Gallery on specific dates. These can be then written up and edited [so that they read grammatically / coherently].
NB Agenda- dates and deadlines should be identified. particularly the dates for the assessment / MA show in Leeds. Where is it to be held? [ I am in Bergen on 16th, 17th, 18th September, so that should also be taken into account.]

Hi everyone.

I would like to propose some activity for this Wednesday's session.

Either in the morning or afternoon, I would like to screen an online lecture in the MA space
followed by a presentation / discussion of ideas surrounding the presentation and its relation to the
New Obsolete catalog and exhibition.

The 'Lecture' will last approx 1hr 30mins and will be followed by a brief presentation of ideas by myself
which shouldn't last more than 10mins.

Depending on what has been planned for the morning session I would ideally like to do this around 11:00.

Who is the lecture to be given by? Yourself? Are we going to record these lectures perhaps?

Pete / Eoin

Pete > I didn't want to give the name of the lecture(r) to avoid it being watched on the web prior to the screening — though this is flawed as a marketing exercise, I'm hoping people will trust me when I say it's related to the exhibition and the publication, and also I think, to a number of peoples work. I might record my part — the other reason for doing this is to suggest potential work for the CT website and to link it to the publication.

Eoin > I've sourced paper suppliers and printers–still waiting for paper samples: I'll try and speculate over prices on Wednesday.

Mark This sounds as if you have absorbed some of the 'semiotexte' ideas of S Lotringer [the editor] finding and denying a market, by reflexive underselling, which at first glance is intentional: to be kept apart from mass media and talking to a small or 'elite' group who might respond well to the scale of an ambition, marked cautiously by remove from media overkill. Yes its obsolete, the idea of any elite, and also the idea of the 'once and for all' new. The 'Idea' itself is obsolete. Its old school I guess but seems highly pertinent to the condition of a worn-out marketing (branding) spin: as a kind of 'conditional necessity' the obsolete seems user-friendly. But I think that the obsolete here is working better as a conceptual strategy, playing between things and image / screens, real and virtual, [in the ruins] of commodity culture, 'post'- design, low-tech transmission, which inform the design economy of the publication and the gallery as 'event'.

10 would be ideal but probably unlikely — I will be there anyway, it could be that we aim for ten, wait for anyone due to come then start by half past. I'll send out an updated post to see if anyone can get there for 10:00.
